UI design

Carple CPW - connection

Soothe pain, build good habits.

The Problem

Many cars only support wired CarPlay, and small wireless adapters can fix that. The interfaces on these devices are usually poor, which leaves drivers confused during setup and troubleshooting.

An adapter is only as good as the experience of connecting it. When the UI is confusing, users blame the product and give up on it, so the design was the difference between a gadget that technically works and one people can actually use.

My Role

I was assigned to design a user-friendly interface for the adapter, then followed the work through development with the client’s Chinese development team.

Working Across a Language Barrier

Communicating with the development team came with a real language barrier, so I built QA slides that pointed to each bug visually, with the exact location marked. That gave the team a clear reference that didn’t depend on written explanations translating well, and it kept feedback fast and precise.

Translating to Languages

The entire app was translated into 4 languages (Turkish, Japanese, Korean, and German), and there were some problems with the font we used for the Japanese translations. Needed to pick a similar font for the Japanese app.

Results

CPWireless shipped and is rated 4.8 across 5,545 customer reviews, with 86% giving the top rating. The themes customers praise most—easy setup, automatic connection when the car starts, and a stable, fast connection—are exactly the experience problems the interface was designed to fix.
