SpatialGO

Movement, maps, play.

The Problem

Research shows girls tend to underperform relative to boys on spatial-thinking tasks (e.g., map wayfinding, mental rotation). This gap closes remarkably easily with game-based training, suggesting it's an exposure/practice gap rather than an ability gap.

This finding emerged from an exploratory research phase in a behavioral change class, where the assignment was to identify a real, behavior-driven problem worth solving. The idea that a seemingly stubborn skill gap could close through something as simple as a game made it a compelling target for a small intervention with outsized impact.

Target Group

Elementary school girls want to build spatial skills to support their interests in art, drawing, and puzzles, and to keep a STEM path open, but lack opportunities to practice since their peers gravitate toward dolls instead. Elementary school boys, meanwhile, are drawn to SpatialGo through competition and gaming since they want to collect every puzzle piece, beat their friends, and earn recognition among classmates.

The Approach

We designed SpatialGO around an AR, Pokémon Go–style mechanic.

First, kids explore a real map to collect puzzle pieces, using wayfinding to locate them. Collecting each piece requires answering a spatial-reasoning question first, for example, identifying which view correctly shows an object after it’s been rotated. Once enough pieces are collected, kids assemble them into a puzzle.

The structure was deliberately designed around wayfinding and mental rotation, the two specific skills the research flagged.

Reflection

This project is a good example of research-first design where the concept came directly out of a specific finding, not an assumption, and every core mechanic maps back to that research rather than being decorative. I prefer testing the design, but the class scope was a bit too narrow for that.
